Subject: Need some help in Maryland

Dear Helane:

Do you know of any folks in Maryland involved in the fight against sludge?  High school football players have Staph
aureus in Prince Frederick and the kids are sick, sick, sick.  The parents just found out that sludge was applied to the
playgrounds last summer--and they found out from the doctors!  My one contact there is a single mother with a sick
kid, scared to death, and with no experience or energy to take on anything except taking care of three children and
keeping a roof over their heads.

I have been sending scientific papers for distribution to the parents to give to the doctors.  The doctors cannot deny
they know nothing now about the antibiotic resistant genes and bacteria in sludge and the massive regrowth potential.
I have sent an overview for the doctors and requested them to contact the MD Board of Health, and local health
departments because this is a serious and perhaps life threatening problem.  I also suggested that the parents contact
the local government and school board to give them the information and request that kids not use the field for soccer
(which they are doing now).  I emailed Jim Bynum about testing the soil on the playing fields and he said it may or may
not culture any bacteria.

According to the mom, most of the kids have had repeated bronchial pneumonia and skin lesions.  The bottom line is
that these kids all have the same strain of S. aureus, according to one MD.

I looked for some contacts, but may have to go to Virginia to get some nearby help for them.  Prince Frederick is close
to DC.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Best.
Nancy
